Cost vs. solid plate

01 · The challenge

Lumen was machining solid 60 mm plate, wasting material and losing weeks to lead time, but a lighter fabrication kept warping in service.

02 · What we did

We designed a ribbed weldment with symmetric weld sequences, added a vibratory stress relief and finish-milled the mounting face in a single setup on the large-bed mill.

03 · The result

Flatness holds inside 0.05 mm on every plate, and the customer's cost per plate dropped by more than a third with a two-week standing lead time.

“We stopped inspecting incoming plates because they never come out of tolerance.”
